Adjudicators: Penelope Price Jones BSc, LRAM, ARAM, PGCA

Marilyn Hill Smith AGSM

Penelope Price Jones was a scholarship holder at the Royal Academy of Music in London, studying with Marjorie Thomas. She later worked with Thomas Hemsley and Paul Hamburger. She sang extensively with choral societies all over the country and had a longstanding recital partnership with her ex-husband Philip Martin. She has made regular visits to the United States where she has performed and given master-classes at summer schools and colleges including Tanglewood, Aspen, Eastman and Syracuse. Her most recent trip was to a music school in Kolkata, India.

Penelope was made an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music in 1998. She now teaches pupils at Dauntsey's School, Wiltshire, choral scholars at Oxford University and privately. For the past few years she has been voice mentor for the Associated Board Certificate of Teaching course in the West of England and holds regular reunions for her past student teachers. She founded the Marden House series of recitals and workshops in Calne, is the Teacher Training Director for the Association of Teachers of Singing, and is a Federation of Festivals Adjudicator.

Marilyn Hill Smith made her debut with English National Opera as Adele in Die Fledermaus. She has sung principal roles with all the major British opera companies, as well as with Canadian Opera and Lyric Opera of Singapore. Her wide and varied repertoire includes performances of early French opera at the Palais de Versailles, Gilbert & Sullivan at the Hollywood Bowl, and Stephen Sondheim at London's Drury Lane. She has sung in concert, oratorio and opera in many major European festivals as well at the BBC Proms. Recitals have taken her as far afield as Zimbabwe, Australia and Brazil, and she is a regular performer on P&O's Classical Music cruises. Marilyn is a particular favourite with audiences of BBC's Friday Night is Music Night. Her recordings of operetta and Ivor Novello have been acclaimed worldwide.
In addition to her busy performance schedule, she also teaches singing, and is an adjudicator member of the British and International Federation of Festivals. We are delighted that she is able to join us at the Watford Festival in 2008.
